Mater Dei Prep Launches First Women’s Hockey Team

Seraphs to become first women’s-only high school team in Shore area

Middletown, NJ, April 17, 2014:  Mater Dei Prep women’s hockey team will begin play in the upcoming 2014-2015 season.  It is the first women’s-only team in the Ocean/Monmouth County area.  The Mater Dei Prep women’s hockey team will play a full varsity schedule against other women’s-only teams in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, and Pennsylvania; the majority of their opponents play in the WIHLMA (Women’s Interscholastic Hockey League of the Mid-Atlantic).

Mater Dei Prep is a Catholic coeducational high school located in Middletown, New Jersey that currently runs 19 varsity sports and competition cheer.  Women’s hockey will be the schools 20th varsity team.  “We are a passionately Catholic school with a long-standing tradition of excellence in the community, classroom, and on the playing field.  The addition of women’s hockey is indicative of our commitment to the school’s mission to provide opportunities for students.  It is an example of the exciting growth that is happening on our campus”.

The women’s hockey team will play its home games at Middletown Ice World.  A state-of-the-art new facility located just a quarter mile from Mater Dei Prep. Dennis Tobin, MDP’s Athletic Director adds, “Our objective was to make certain we have access to a facility in our area that can accommodate our student’s day-to-day schedules.  Across our athletic department, we work to have schedules and resources that compliment the family, community, and academic commitments of our students”.

The formation of Mater Dei Prep’s women’s hockey team marks the first women’s-only team in the Shore area.   This allows its participants to play according to women’s hockey rules, and not in a coed league.

An information and welcome night will be held on May 12, 2014 7:00PM at Mater Dei Prep.  For additional information visit Mater Dei Prep’s website at or contact the Athletic Office at 732-671-9100 ext-12 email:
