Feb 16, 2014

EHL Junior Titans

The EHL Juniors came out of their winless slump this past Friday as the beat North Division foe the Boston Bandits by the score of 4-3. A late goal from forward Anthony Cusanelli with 1:42 remaining on the game clock sealed the victory for the Titans. “Overall it was a great team effort” said Cusanelli after the game. The EHL squad had a 3-0 cushion, but the Bandits fought all the way bay to tie the score 3-3. That’s when Cusanelli took control of the puck at center ice, drove down the left wing and sniped short side. The EHL Juniors lost their remaining two games at the Presidents Day Showcase in Walpole, MA but had chances to win in both games. Forward Mac Howey who totaled 4 goals 3 assists for 7 points in the three games led all Titans forwards over the weekend. The EHL Junior Titans have two regular season games remaining before entering a one game play-off contest versus South Division rival the Washington Jr. Nationals. The play-in game will take place at the Middletown Ice World on Wednesday night February 26, 2014. Winner of the play-in game will travel to Hookset, NH to take on the league leading New Hampshire Junior Monarchs in a first round best of three playoff series. Captain Jimmy Burns says, “We just had a successful weekend, and if we have a good week of practice, win our remaining games and beat the Nationals, then anything can happen in the playoffs.” Be sure to look out for information regarding the home playoff game via the www.jrtitans.com.

MET League Junior Titans

The MET League Juniors also went 1-2 on the weekend at their Presidents Day Showcase in Brewster, NY. They won their first contest 5-3 over the Cranston Reds but dropped their remaining 2 games to the Brewster Bulldogs and New York Applecore respectively. Andrew Yasenchock paced the MET League forwards by tallying 5 points on the weekend with 1 goal and 4 assists. The MET League Junior Titans continue to prepare for the playoffs as they too have 2 regular season games remaining and will most likely have to take part in a play-in game once the playoff season commences. Remember that the Metropolitan Junior Hockey League Championship round will be taking place at the Middletown Ice World from March 20-23. Four teams will descend upon Middletown but only one will be crowned Keegan Cup Champions.

U18AAA

The U18 team traveled to Troy, Michigan for the NAPHL Playoff series this past weekend. Just missing the Top 8 by three points, the most successful U18 team in Titans history competed for a Silver Championship but fell one game short. In the round robin preliminary round the U18s went 3-0 and outscored their opponents 15-3. Paced by Ryan PriceCameron Klein, and Christ Wuestneck the U18s cruised into the semi-finals to face the Phoenix Firebirds.  It was here that their run ended however, as the Titans fell 2-1 in a shootout. It was a bitter sweet ending for the U18 Titans as in their last 9 NAPHL games they have been unbeaten in regulation with a record of 6-0-3. Including the playoffs, the U18s finish with an NAPHL Record of 12-9-7. Team captain Tim Gelatt said, “Our team got better throughout the year and even though we lost today, we are proud to have set a new standard for future U18 teams in this organization.”

U16 National

The U16 National team also traveled to Troy, Michigan this past weekend for the NAPHL Playoff series. Finishing with a regular season record of 17-2-1 the U16s were the second seed for the Gold Championship. In the round robin preliminary round the U16s went 2-0-1 and found themselves facing off against league rival the Omaha Hockey Club. Omaha and the U16s have a history as the U16 Titans handed Omaha its only regular season loss in shootout fashion back at a showcase earlier in the season. Forwards Ryan WalkerMichael Gelatt, and Defenseman Brad Becker took the ice in the U16 NAPHL All-star alongside their Omaha rivals. The two teams have had friendly and combatant exchanges all season and unfortunately it was Omaha who came out on top in the semi-final game. This may be the fire the U16s need to get ready for their league and district playoff run coming up in 2 weeks. Leading scorer and team captain Ryan Walker said “We are disappointed with our performance against Omaha, but we are all motivated to get back to work and make a run through districts and to nationals.”
